History of the club

The Rotary Club of Wollundry Wagga Wagga Inc. was chartered as part of Rotary International on 13th May 1978 with Graham Hornibrook as Charter President. The club was formed as a lunch time club to offer an alternate meeting time to the existing three evening clubs.

Book collections was an early community service program but within the first year the Wagga Wagga Sunday Markets commenced. The Sunday Markets were successful for many years and by its cessation in 2016 had raised in excess of $2M.

The monthly Producers/Farmers Market was commenced in the early 2000s as was the annual Food and Wine Festival – the clubs first large festival undertaking. The FWF was very successful and attracted large crowds who enjoyed the offerings of many local wineries and gourmet food and dining outlets. Like the markets, it ran its course and ended in 2019.

The Gears and Beers Festival was conceived by visionary club member and cycling enthusiast Phil McIntosh. It started in 2014 and has grown annually to become a two day festival attracting thousands of riders and family/supporters from all over Australia and the world and provides significant financial injection to the local economy. The event is planned and managed by a dedicated team of club members with the support of many local Rotary Clubs and other organisations and community members.

The Wollundry Photo Competition is a newer and growing annual venture, having started in 2021 under the leadership of veteran local photographer and club member John Egan.

The Club has a reputation for robust fellowship among members and extending friendship to club visitors. Fellowship is fostered through interaction on the various programs and festivals run by the club as well as the weekly meetings and club social events.
